What is it about wallpaper that makes a room feel special, feel loved in, turns a house into a home?

There are some rooms that lend themselves more to wallpaper than others I think, and by that I mean, wallpaper can really transform them.

I love wallpaper in ‘good’ sitting rooms. I think wallpaper can make a room that isn’t used that often, feel really cosy and comfortable rather than feeling rather bare and cold. I detest rooms that feel cold, yes, a warm colour in paint can warm them up but you can’t beat a wallpaper that fits the look of the room for adding character and comfort.

I often think that downstairs loos can be a tad bare too. Often quite small, there is usually just room for the toilet and a small sink, perhaps a small bin on the floor. Wallpaper doesn’t take up any room!  I’ve found that the ‘Un Dimanche A Paris’ to be a really popular wallpaper for the smallest room in the house  – people like it as it is stylish, quirky, fun, brightly coloured and it isn’t too expensive either.

Master Bedroom – wallpaper on the feature wall behind the bed definitely adds something to the main bedroom – be it drama, cosiness, more colour, more interest or perhaps all of the above.  The only thing I don’t like about wallpaper in the bedroom is if it matches the curtains – I prefer designs that co-ordinate rather than match exactly.

What do you think? Do you think that wallpaper makes some rooms that bit more special and homely?

Fancy a cup of tea and some cucumber sandwiches. This new ‘Afternoon Tea’ wallpaper design by Yukari Sweeney design is very very pretty and is perfect for a dining room. Coming in four colourways – Blueberries, Cocoa, zesty Orange and soft Soda, there’s a colour to suit every mood you might like to create:

Isn’t the design pretty? I’m loving the shapes of the teapot and teacup and the jelly or blancmange.

It’s not an inexpensive wallpaper at £150/€195/$295 per roll but it is exquisite.  The quality is so good, it almost looks handpainted.  You can check out the other colourways here as well as buying this beautiful wallpaper online.

The term ‘skeletons in the closet’ usually refers to dark secrets closely held by a family to try and ensure that they stay a secret.  Elli Popp’s ‘Skeletons in the Closet’ wallpaper design is certainly different – it does feature skeletons within a leaf design along with striking blue butterflies and corsetted ladies, cute puppies and scissors!

It certainly isn’t for the faint-hearted and would make a superb statement in particular rooms. You can buy it online here. It is pricey but the quality is so high, it almost feels like a fabric.

Feeling superstitious?  This new wallpaper design ‘Lucky Charms’ by Barneby Gates features symbols of fortune arranged in a classical urn formation.  So if you are the type of person who throws salt over your shoulder if it spills on the table, you know that symbols such as the the horse-shoes, crossed keys, acorns and ladybirds (amongst others) are sure to bring luck to any home!

Plus aren’t they a stylish design?  Available in two colours, I would particularly love the green in a study or library or hall.  I like the metallic effect too and how it would alter the colour of the wallpaper as the light changes during the day.

You can buy wallpaper online from Garrendenny Lane Interiors, including, of course, this new Lucky Charms wallpaper design.

If you are looking for a wonderfully restful wallpaper, perhaps a wallpaper for a library or a music room or a room where you like to relax, then I think the Dragonfly Wallpaper by Barneby Gates in Apple Green is perfect.

The Dragonfly wallpaper is also available in Pewter which is really striking, more suited to a study or hallway I think. The design incorporates the dragonfly in its adult phase along with water lilies and is really relaxing and soothing.

I’m loving the spring blooms in the garden at the moment, particularly of magnolia trees and Designers  Guild’s new Madame Butterfly wallpaper from their Kasuri collection ticks all the boxes in terms of being springlike, fresh, pretty with beautiful blossoms.
