What is it about wallpaper that makes a room feel special, feel loved in, turns a house into a home?

There are some rooms that lend themselves more to wallpaper than others I think, and by that I mean, wallpaper can really transform them.

I love wallpaper in ‘good’ sitting rooms. I think wallpaper can make a room that isn’t used that often, feel really cosy and comfortable rather than feeling rather bare and cold. I detest rooms that feel cold, yes, a warm colour in paint can warm them up but you can’t beat a wallpaper that fits the look of the room for adding character and comfort.

I often think that downstairs loos can be a tad bare too. Often quite small, there is usually just room for the toilet and a small sink, perhaps a small bin on the floor. Wallpaper doesn’t take up any room!  I’ve found that the ‘Un Dimanche A Paris’ to be a really popular wallpaper for the smallest room in the house  - people like it as it is stylish, quirky, fun, brightly coloured and it isn’t too expensive either.

Master Bedroom – wallpaper on the feature wall behind the bed definitely adds something to the main bedroom – be it drama, cosiness, more colour, more interest or perhaps all of the above.  The only thing I don’t like about wallpaper in the bedroom is if it matches the curtains – I prefer designs that co-ordinate rather than match exactly.

What do you think? Do you think that wallpaper makes some rooms that bit more special and homely?

Fancy a cup of tea and some cucumber sandwiches. This new ‘Afternoon Tea’ wallpaper design by Yukari Sweeney design is very very pretty and is perfect for a dining room. Coming in four colourways – Blueberries, Cocoa, zesty Orange and soft Soda, there’s a colour to suit every mood you might like to create:

Isn’t the design pretty? I’m loving the shapes of the teapot and teacup and the jelly or blancmange.

It’s not an inexpensive wallpaper at £150/€195/$295 per roll but it is exquisite.  The quality is so good, it almost looks handpainted.  You can check out the other colourways here as well as buying this beautiful wallpaper online.

Looking for something different for a feature wall in your living room? What about these wallpaper panels by Scandinavian Surface laid horizontally across one wall with a striking paint as a backdrop?  At 280 cm long, that would work on any room that is up to 9.3 feet wide.

It would also work really well as a headboard for a feature wall in a bedroom. What do you think?

English Robin Wallpaper – there are so many bird wallpapers available now that it can be hard to choose just one to write about.  I’m actually slightly spooked by birds in fabric and wallpaper – it is almost like I feel they will come to life and fly around the room. When a friend purchased a bird fabric for her bedroom, I just looked at her in amazement, knowing that I’d never be able to sleep with bird fabric fluttering in a summer breeze. I’m not afraid of actual bird though so it’s all a bit bizarre. Maybe I saw ‘The Birds’ at a young age!

English Robin - Barneby Gates

English Robin by Barneby Gates is a lovely design, I love the berries on the branches and the robins sitting sedately. I’m not so sure about the larger robin flying but that’s my weird hangup I think!

What rooms would you choose for these wallpapers?  I’d love the cream one in a bedroom if I didn’t have a hangup about birds and the jade in a hall or study.  It would look fabulous in a boutique or a salon too.  You can buy both these bird wallpapers online right here.

You don’t need wallpaper to create a feature wall as you can easily create a feature with a wall of framed photographs or pictures or colourful wallhangings. I like the simplicity of this Coat Tree wall decal by Ferm Living – especially perfect for small hallways.  It can become a ‘working’ coat hook stand by placing hooks over the sticker in the relevant places – how clever!

The coat tree wall decal can be purchased online here for almost worldwide delivery.

If you would like to use wallpaper in your hall but don’t want to wallpaper your walls, this is a great idea for adding interest to the stairs and it could all be done with one roll of wallpaper I’d imagine. I particularly like the one with the co-ordinated wallpapers. If you are in Ireland and would like to purchase some wallpapers online, you can do so from Garrendenny Lane.

Putting wallpaper in your hall is great for adding an atmosphere of formality to your hallway particularly if you create formal symmetry with 2 chairs separated by a small console table or similar as in the picture below with the Horse Trellis wallpaper by Barneby Gates.

The Chairs wallpaper is perfect for a hallway too – the subtle stripe in the design will add height and teamed with a chair placed in front of it – it really is a conversation point too. Placing a chair or console table will protect the wallpaper too from children rubbing by the wall as they run by it – well, I’ve found that to be the case and the wallpaper in my hall is still looking good after 4 years!

I was recently asked for a recommendation for a ‘dog’ wallpaper as the owner wanted to put it in her dog’s room.  These are the two I came up with but if you have found any others that are nice, do let us know about them below in the comments.

We have Slipper Wolf, which is a wall panel by Scandinavian Surface.  It’s good fun and certainly not overpowering as it can be mixed and matched with other wall panels or used on its own.

Slipper Wolf would work really well by breaking up a long wall or to create a feature wall with one  or two wallpaper panels.

I really like its play on wild/tame as we see a wolf in a domesticated situation, sitting on a chair and doing that age-old trick of bringing its owner his or her slippers or perhaps he is chewing them just as our puppies do!

It is certainly different! What do you think? Do you like it?

Our other ‘dog wallpaper’ is called ‘Best in Show‘ by Osborne and Little, a flock wallpaper that is available in three colourways and shows many favourite breeds in silhouette against a plain background.

I know lots of people love their pets – is it too much to give them a dog wallpapered room? Or do you use a dog wallpaper because you love animals?

I’m liking this idea from Harlequin’s method of showcasing their wallpaper collections – simply beg or borrow some wallpaper remnants from friends or stores or use your own remnants from wallpapering other rooms and brighten up a bare wall by framing your favourite wallpapers within some chunky, elaborate yet plainly painted picture frames.

They are too nice to be simply left on the floor though – these would make a fabulous feature wall.
